There has never been a greater time to go solar than today.  The government in the USA along with other countries, for example, is promoting it big time so therefore several incentives are available not only with the government but even from the energy suppliers themselves.  For example:  the federal government will provide consumers up to 30% solar energy tax credits for having a solar powered home or business.  This is a dollar for dollar tax credit not just a deduction.  Your state government may provide an incentive for solar panel installation as well.  And every energy provider (the grid) is required by law (USA) to make available to consumers a program called "net metering" - the meter actually spins backwards!  This program provides a payback credit to anyone connected to the grid that produces more electricity than their home or business uses each month.  This premium rate is in addition to the rate you pay your energy supplier.  Furthermore, if you are connected to the grid you will not have to worry about your solar energy system not producing enough power at night.  The grid will supply your energy needs even when your system is not producing electricity.  In addition to energy supplier's paying you for your unused produced electricity, some will help offset your startup costs by giving you a flat payment.  For example, the Tennessee Valley Authority in the southeast part of the USA will pay $1000 to anyone that joins their green partner program.
