Geothermal

What is Geothermal Energy?

Deep, deep within the earth core, geothermal energy (geo - earth) (therme - heat) is being continuously produced. Geothermal heat is produced with temperatures hotter than the sun's surface. It is produced by the slow, decay of radioactive particles which is what happens to all rocks.

You may already know the earth is made up of layers:

  • Core
  • Mantle
  • Crust

And each layer has it's role in producing and containing geothermal energy.

The "Ring of Fire" is where most geothermal activity happens in our world. Most geothermal activity is in this ring of fire encircling the Pacific Ocean. Geothermal reservoirs are deep inside the earth not visible to the human eye except in certain forms, such as Volcanoes and Fumeroles, Hot springs and Geysers. One such popular hot springs in located in Georgia of the USA but for the most part, geothermal is in the western area of our world. Geothermal Heating

Direct uses of hot water have been used as an energy source since ancient times and surprisingly for bathing, cooking and heating. The water is hot and rich in minerals and many believe the waters are healing, such as the popular hot springs located in Georgia that President Franklin D. Roosevelt used to help his crippled legs.  By the way, many still use these hot springs today for healing purposes.

Geothermal is also used to make electricity. Geothermal pumps produce heating geothermal and geothermal cooling. It is a win win situation since the ground is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Geothermal is very energy efficient and a clean source of energy and is used all over the world. More traditional energy methods are used mostly but the popularity of geothermal is getting stronger.  The EPA and Department of Energy have recently parterned to push this type of clean energy.

Perhaps you have been considering geothermal for your energy needs but don't know where to start.  The Geothermal Heat Pumps Installlation guide could perhaps answer all your questions and concerns.  In it you will find tips on the right system for you along with other helpful information.
