Five
Reasons to Consider Solar Energy
Why Solar Energy?
There has never been a better time to use solar energy for your home or business' energy needs. Today, many
incentives are readily available from several governmental bodies, such as federal, state, local
levels and other sources. These tax credits can be applied for your primary home or secondary
home. And, improved solar panels have a life-span of 20 to 30 years.
Let's take a look at some of the incentives available:
1. Tax Incentives: The U.S. government on several levels, such as federal, state and local
areas are offering tax credits for all citizens who use certain types of renewable energy as their source of
heating and cooling and everyday electricity needs. For instance, the federal government is offering a 30% tax
credit to all taxpayers who have a solar energy system installed at their home or business thur 2016. This tax
credit is dollar for dollar and not just a tax deduction which is a greater benefit to you. Also, state incentives
are available; however, you need to check with the state you live in because each state can vary based on incentive
offers. This information can be found at www.dsireusa.org. Your
local government may offer property owners some type of incentive, too. Again, each local governing body
program can differ.
2. Net Metering: Energy providers by law are required to offer their customers an incentive
called "net metering". Net metering is a program where your energy supplier, also called "the grid" will pay you a
premium rate on top of the rate they charge you for any electricity you produce from solar energy, such as from
photovoltaic panels that is not needed by your home or business. The meter actually spins backwards in this
case!
3. Incentive to Offset Start Up Costs: Green energy providers when you agree to partner with
them, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the southern states of the U.S. will help you offset your
solar energy system installation costs by paying you $1,000.
4. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint: Going green as a whole is just good for our environment.
Solar energy is free, clean energy! The sun's rays each day produce enough energy to supply our whole world with
all of its energy needs.
5. Slash Your Energy Bills: With our present economy, many people are desperately needing to
save any and all money that they can. Using solar energy as your home's or business' energy needs instead of
traditional energy means puts more money in your pocket, plain and simple. For example, the average size home
solar panel system is 5.2 kilowatts which was $8.50 per watt in 2008 equalivent to $44,200. Now,
with local, state and federal incentives we have available today this amount would fall to $29.120 or $5.90
per watt. This very same system could earn a federal tax credit savings of 11,260. And in addition to
the federal tax credit, incentives are available on local and state levels as well. Since this is a simplified
example, it is recommended to consult your tax adviser.
Yes it is true! Many incentives are available to make your home and business more energy efficient. Solar energy is
definately one source of energy to look to for your home's or business' energy needs. And, one company in
